Open Gardens 2008 *** 'Please note - The Rectory garden will be open on Saturday 13th September and not on the date advertised on the printed program. Devonshire teas will be available on 13th September. 1. BLEAK HOUSE GARDENS, 166 Degraves Mill Drive, Malmsbury (take Malmsbury turnoff) Maarten Reinalda The rose garden first created in early 1980’s by rosarian and author Susan Irvine, opening for the first time to the Festival. Maarten Reinalda has transformed and extended the garden to its present 15 acres which includes a lovely formal area, several ponds, 5 various groves, a newly completed secret garden and 300 metre Crab apple walk through the orchard to the lower dam. 800 plantings of trees and roses have been added over the past few years. Seating throughout the gardens makes for a relaxed and enjoyable visit. Family picnics are welcome and both morning and afternoon tea will be available. 2. BRINGALBIT, 512 Sidonia Road, Sidonia via Kyneton Susan Fox The historic property of Bringalbit is a farm and country retreat. The 1870’s granite homestead is surrounded by 10 acres of parkland and gardens which have been developed over the past 130 years. The ornamental lake was made in the late 1890’s when many exotic trees were planted. Recent plantings include perennial and shrub borders, roses, succulents, quince and crab-apple walks. The sweeping lawns and stone walls are of a scale that complement the open landscape of the farmland. Paintings, Drawings, Cards by Susan Fox available for sale. Open Daily: 10am-5pm. Kyneton Corinella was first farmed in the 1870's. The present house was relocated to the site early last century and trees were planted. The Rollinson family purchased the farm in the 1920's and Norma and Hal Rollinson made the garden in the 40's and 50's. It was a spring garden with many bulbs and hellebores. There is no lawn but many gravel paths wind around fruit trees, shrubs and roses. It was always open for the Daffodil Festival. The garden was untended during the 90's and is currently being restored. The bulbs have multiplied and there should be a good display this year. Morning, afternoon tea and refreshments available. 4. GLEN-OLNEY, 23 Epping Street, Kyneton Ken & Joy Robbins A 20 year old English-style garden on a gentle hillside. This town garden has grown into a picturesque blend of mature trees, shrubs, daffodils and ground cover. Open 13th and 14th September 10am-5pm. 5. GLENMOR, 1234 Trentham Road, Tylden Maureen & Glenn Jacobs A 2 acre garden with Spring bulbs, sculptures by local artists, winding hedges and dry stone walls. A knot garden planted in tulips leads through a grove of birches to a dry tolerant parterre garden and a Rose arbour with views to Mt. Macedon. 6. LAURIMAR GLEN, 213 Northumberland Road, Pipers Creek Janet Mitchell & Eric Scoble A Daffodil bordered driveway leads to a Lilydale Rock Residence, set on 3 acres of garden. A collection of old farming machinery, the original bluestone fences and old homestead kitchen (museum), dolls house, plus 400 varieties of daffodils add interest. Help feed the Llamas, Deer and Elk or relax with a cuppa. No pets please. Potted bulbs for sale. 7. ROSEBERY HILL, Pipers Creek - Pastoria Road, Pipers Creek Barry & Ruth Murphy ‘Rosebery Hill’ has a long driveway lined with daffodils & white blossomed lucerne trees, and a 250 metre daffodil walk with hundreds of blooms in a wide range of colours. Approximately 8 acres are devoted to rare and unusual trees and shrubs – mostly planted in the last 25 years. There is a framework of much older conifers and oaks. Of particular interest are the 80 year old cork oak, and a topiary section of self sown cypress. The garden is rambling and undulating and paths are not made – solid footwear is recommended. 8. SPRING HILL NURSERY, Cnr Trentham & Springhill Roads, Tylden An extensive award winning nursery and garden full of plants displayed in various settings designed to simply inspire, guide and enjoy. 9. ST HELIER, 55 Burton Avenue, Kyneton
Suzanne Ereaut A young and developing garden on 1½ acres. Manchurian pears line the drive leading to a gravel garden of mixed plantings backed by 6 Mop Top Maples. A vegetable garden and glasshouse lead to a gated Crab Apple walk and mixed border of shrubs and roses. There is also a conifer garden, winter garden and a variety of trees throughout. Enter by the drive immediately after Flynns Lane with parking available on the property before the start of the driveway. THE RECTORY, Cnr Piper & Ebden Streets, Kyneton Elegant garden rooms framed by pittosporum & cypress hedges surround, significant 1850’s bluestone house, intricate box parterre, soft plants of spring bulbs, roses & hellebores. WOORABINDA, 201 Shepherds Hill Road, Lauriston Rob and Jan Hovelt Situated 10kms west of Kyneton, the Chinese Elm driveway to Woorabinda is under planted with daffodils and leads to a large country garden spread over nearly two acres. It features a crab apple walk and various rose and perennial gardens, with daffodils spread throughout. Within the woodland area at the rear of the house is a meandering stream leading in a large pond. There is also a protea plantation.Plants are available for sale.
